Assessment
Assessment is a strategy to evaluate student’s learning. (Heick, 2019)
There are different types of assessments that were used in the school where I was training which are summative and formative assessments.
As a training teacher, I used both formative and summative assessment. Starting with formative assessment, during each class when I was doing my teaching practice I assessed students using different activities and I had a checklist to use when I was observing students as well as asking students questions during activity time. Moreover, at the end of the class, I asked students questions about the lesson to gain and understanding of their learning. Assessing students formatively helped me on check of their understanding and planning for the next lesson as well. Another important part of formative assessment is giving students feedback about what they have done and how they were answering me. Giving feedback could increase student’s self-esteem for the ones who were answering write or doing a good job. While for the students who were answering with a wrong answer, they can have other chance by trying again when I said to them for example: “not exactly, but can you thing about something else?”.
On other hand, I used summative assessment as well. At the end of the unit, I did assessed students to get their levels and see what can I plan for the next unit or next week depends on student’s level. One of these assessments was assessing students on blending using 3 letters and assessing them on phonics as well. This assessment was done 3 by 3 students so I can save time and assess them all.
Moreover, I believe that collecting data is important so I collected a portfolio of student's work to assess them in craft and design, phonics and maths. If they were something painted or a craft, I put them on drying area first then I put it in to each student's file. At the end, I went back to check again on their works. In addition, I have a copy of my checklist as well. I used the application on the iPad to give some reflection of student’s work.
Teachers at school use two applications for assessing students. One of them named Seasaw Class and this one used for the facility in school only and it is private. The other application is named Classroom Monitor which is used between parents, teacher and the students. This application is used to upload students work for the students- even a picture or a video. Both teachers and parents can add comments on this application and each students had his private page.
Here are some evidence of assessing students and how they were collected.
